Back in May this year, ASUS created a special edition ROG Astral RTX 5090 Dhahab Edition for its Middle Eastern market, which comes with 6.5g of gold built into it. Now, in an unnecessary effort to outdo itself, the PC gaming brand recently showed off an ROG Astral RTX 5090 made with 5kg of pure gold.
At roughly US$100,000 (~RM426,000) per 1kg of gold, this super special golden edition of the RTX 5090 costs upwards of US$500,000 (~RM2.13 million). And that’s excluding the price of the card and technology that is afforded by the Blackwell GPU. As you’d imagine, all that gold makes this RTX 5090 a very heavy GPU, weighing a hefty 7.2kg, 5kg of which is the gold itself. For context, the Dhahab Edition had a starting SRP of US$7,000 (~RM29,788), so you can imagine just how big a jump in price that is.
There are some discrepancies that stand out with this golden GPU, chief among which is the quality of the gold. If you look at the pictures of the card taken by X user 孤城Hardware, it looks as if the cooler shroud was roughly cast and left unpolished, almost as if ASUS didn’t have time to iron out and literally buff out the rough edges on the card. As a result, the GPU lacks the lustre and shine that you would usually see with gold. But again, the company did confirm that the the golden card is a legitimate piece of hardware at its booth at BiliBiliWorld 2025.
Now, the question is: is ASUS planning on selling the Golden ROG Astral RTX 5090, and is there even a buyer lined up for the card? At this point, we’re going to lean towards “Probably not”. While the card is worth its weight in gold (pun intended), we don’t think it is technically feasible to own, let alone install into a PC. at 7.2kg, you’re more likely to damage the PCIe interface over long-term use, even with the aid of an anti-sagging bracket. Having said that, we do not doubt that someone would definitely purchase the card if it were to go on sale, primarily for bragging rights.
