It looks like Microsoft is really replacing the Blue Screen of Death with the Black Screen of Death, coming up for Windows 11. It seemed pretty set in stone when we first saw such reports late last month. But now more recent reports note that the rollout has begun.
In a Windows Blog post, Microsoft says that the new BSoD is coming as part of a new Windows 11 build, specifically 26100.4762 (KB5062660). This will be rolled out to Insiders in the Release Preview Channel first. But even among Insiders, the new look is being rolled out gradually.
Within the post, this change is documented as a “more streamlined interface” for when an unexpected restart happens. Beyond the colour change, the new BSoD “displays a more readable layout while keeping the technical details visible”. From a previous example the stop code and faulty driver will be listed, making it simpler to troubleshoot the issue.
The rollout also includes something called quick machine recovery. This “automatically detects and fixes widespread issues on Windows 11 devices running the Windows Recovery Environment”. The process involves connecting to the internet and getting a targeted fix through Windows Update, but it has to be “a widespread boot issue” for this to work.
