A lot has been happening with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in the last couple of weeks. From the announcement of the opt-in Time of Use (ToU) scheme which introduced peak and off peak consumption rates, the Electricity Tariff Restructuring which took effect on July 1st to the Federal Court ruling that it is not eligible to claim reinvestment allowance in their tax assessment dispute with LHDN.
Today, customers who use the TNB mobile app and myTNB portal were in for a shock when they checked on their smart meter utilization report. While the normal rates for electricity consumption after the new tariff’s kicked in is between RM0.27 to RM0.37 per kWh, the current smart meter consumption calculation has this at a staggering RM1 per kWh.

While we honestly still believe that this is a glitch that will be rectified soon, many customers are also expressing a shock at how high their bill for the month of July is appearing to be, considering it is only still the 8th day of July. We can also independently confirm that the readings appear to be completely off the charts if compared to similar readings in previous months. Customers have been taking to TNB’s social media channels to vent out their obvious frustration as most have not made any changes to their consumption habits.

We are reaching out to TNB for an explanation regarding this issue, and are hopeful that it is nothing more than a glitch that will be rectified soon.
