CD Projekt Red (CDPR) officially confirmed that a second instalment of Edgerunners is in the works. Known simply as Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, the studio behind the critically acclaimed game and miniseries said that the next season of the anime had already entered production, during a livestream.
Then, as now, Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 will be entirely animated by the renowned Japanese animation company, Studio Trigger, and will be set in the realm of Night City. Important to note that is that the second instalment of the anime will be focused on entirely new cast of edgerunners, and not the first protagonist of from the first, David Martinez. That message is made even more obvious with the official teaser video that CDPR released on YouTube. “David is dead. But Night City lives on.”
“David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we’ve done before,” said Bartoz Sztybor, showrunner, story writer, and producer on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. He will be joined by lead character designer Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will be responsible for the screenplay adaptation. The panel ended with an invitation to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage at the Peacock Theater during studio TRIGGER’s panel later in the evening.”
Little is known about Edgerunners 2 and the plot or its eventual release date. What is known, though, is that the second season will comprise 10 episodes and, based on the trailer and poster, the protagonist is a character with a video camera, suggesting that braindance (BD) videos could be a major theme, which in turn means that cyberpsychosis could take on an even more prominent part of the upcoming miniseries.
