For better or worse, the Blue Screen of Death is iconic to just about every iteration of Windows, with a new-ish look every once in awhile. But it looks like Microsoft is looking to replace it with something else that still keeps the BSoD acronym. The sign of your PC crashing will soon be a Black Screen of Death, according to The Verge.
The report notes that the new BSoD looks more like the screen you’d see during a Windows update. Those that are old enough to remember Windows 8 may instead getting some feelings of déjà vu, at least from the still in the report. Though the new iteration also comes with a benefit for those with the relevant troubleshooting skills – the stop code and faulty driver will be shown in the Black Screen of Death.

Cited in the report is David Weston, VP of enterprise and OS security at Microsoft, who says that the new BSoD “is really an attempt on clarity”. The idea is that the aforementioned details being mentioned would let users and IT folks know more quickly what went wrong, “whether it’s Windows versus a component”, so that it can be fixed faster.
As for when the new BSoD is being rolled out, Microsoft says tht it will be sometime “later this summer”, according to the report. No specifics beyond that was provided, but this will be rolled out alongside the Quick machine Recovery feature, which is made to quickly restore machines that can’t boot. Both are noted to be in response to the Crowdstrike incident from last year.
