As electric vehicle technology continues to advance rapidly, more companies are entering the market with innovative breakthroughs. Among them is Huawei, which has patented a sulfide-based solid-state battery capable of delivering driving ranges of up to 3,000km and ultra-fast charging in just five minutes.

According to the patent, Huawei is developing a solid-state battery architecture with an energy density between 400 and 500 Wh/kg—reportedly three times higher than that of conventional lithium-ion cells used in today’s electric vehicles. Additionally, the company claims that this new battery pack may have solved a major issue that the current battery packs have.

In the filed patent, Huawei notes that by doping sulfide electrolytes with nitrogen, the company is developing a battery pack with enhanced electrochemical stability, improved safety and reduced degradation. While these advancements sound promising, it’s important to note that this remains a theoretical approach for now.

Moreover, for such batteries to be implemented, automakers would need to design EVs capable of accommodating this new technology. At the same time, the EV infrastructure – particularly chargers and charging stations – would need significant upgrades to support it.

At the same time, Huawei faces several challenges in bringing this technology to fruition and commercialising it. According to CNC, solid electrolytes typically have lower ionic conductivity compared to their liquid counterparts, and interfacial resistance remains a key factor limiting efficiency. Additionally, high production costs—currently ranging between CNY8,000 and CNY10,000 per kWh (~RM6,500 to ~RM8,000)—pose a significant barrier to mass-market adoption.

Nevertheless, this new approach has sparked both interest and concern among global competitors. In fact, according to the IEA, established automakers like Honda and battery manufacturers such as Samsung SDI are actively conducting research and diagnostics aimed at advancing EV battery technology.
