Tesla’s second-generation Optimus robot is now on display at 1 Utama shopping mall as part of an ongoing roadshow. For most of us, its appearance came as a surprise, having received little to no fanfare – aside from a single post shared days earlier on Tesla Malaysia’s official Instagram account.
That said, don’t expect it to greet you or serve drinks. Unlike the functional units showcased during Tesla’s “We Robot” event in October last year, this particular Optimus Gen 2 is merely a display piece – or in the words of a Tesla staff member on-site, “it was shipped here without its innards.”
Still, the exhibit offers a rare chance to get an up-close look at the updated model while it remains on display. The Tesla pop-up is located at GF Luxe, 1 Utama and runs until 15 June 2025. It’s unclear whether the company plans to showcase it elsewhere after this.
For those who missed the “We Robot” event—where Tesla also revealed its Robovan and Robotaxi autonomous vehicles—the Optimus Gen 2 represents a notable upgrade in both design and function. It appears more humanoid than its predecessor, opting for a sleeker white finish over exposed metallic panels. A replica of the original Optimus is also on display, allowing visitors to compare the two.
The second-gen robot is reportedly more agile and intelligent as well. Attendees of the earlier event noted that it could hold basic conversations, though reports indicate these interactions were assisted via remote human control.
Perhaps one day we’ll get to see a fully operational model in Malaysia – let alone a commercially available version, which Elon Musk has suggested may cost around US$30,000 (~RM127,110).
