WhatsApp finally got its iPad app, after years of it not being a thing for whatever reason. Another app that didn’t have an iPad app for whatever reason was Instagram, but that may change in the near future as well, according to a recent report. Said report also comes with a reasoning that boils down to a technical complication, which sounds like it shouldn’t be complicated in the first place.
More specifically, the new info comes courtesy of the Power On newsletter by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Addressed at the end in the subscriber-only section, Gurman claims that Instagram was the “most highly anticipated iPad app ever” rather than WhatsApp. The claim aside, Meta Platforms Inc personnel are said to be actively testing and developing the picture-sharing app on the Apple tablet.
Part of the challenge with porting Instagram onto the iPad was that Meta, which owns Instagram as well as Facebook and WhatsApp, was concerned about the way square images would look on the apple tablets. Gurman also mentions the way that images “have often been low-resolution”, which would be more evident on a larger screen. Which is an odd concern to have as the app has been available on Android tablets for the longest time.
At any rate, Gurman claims that Instagram on iPad should be a thing within the year if everything goes according to plan. Though Gurman also seemingly hints at beef between Apple and Meta executives as to why this effort didn’t start sooner.
