There is no doubt that electric vehicles have become a major segment of the automotive industry, with many players introducing new technologies to strengthen their presence in the market. One of them is the Chinese battery manufacturer CATL, which has launched a new battery swapping technology known as Choco-SEB (Swapping Electric Block).

Named after the chocolate bar-like shape, the Choco-SEB allows drivers two swap a dead battery with a new one in under 100 seconds. This time-saving technology could revolutionise the way EVs are recharged, eliminating the need for lengthy charging stops.

Currently, CATL has equipped 1,000 units of the Changan Oshan 520 with its Choco-SEB battery technology, marking the first batch for real-world testing. The Oshan 520, based on the petrol-powered Changan Eado sedan, features a 56 kWh LFP battery, a 141 hp (105 kW) front-mounted electric motor, and offers a range of up to 515 km according to CLTC standards.

The battery manufacturer is also collaborating with automakers including AC, SAIC, BAIC, FAW, and Nio to develop additional EVs that support the Choco-SEB system. In fact, the upcoming GAC Aion S and Hongqi E-QM5 are among the models said to be compatible with the technology.

CATL has already established 34 battery swapping stations in the city of Chongqing, Changan and plans to introduce 16 more by the end of 2025. Each station can store up to 30 batteries and is capable of performing more than 800 swaps per day.

As mentioned, this Choco-SEB has the potential to transform the EV ecosystem, especially if successfully adopted in commercial models. It will rule the waiting period of getting an EV charged with the faster and more convenient alternative through battery swapping.
