Alongside iOS 18 (or iOS 26, according to a recent rumour), Apple is expected to unveil other major updates to its different platforms during this year’s WWDC, which is slated to happen next week. Likely included is the successor to macOS Sequoia, the current platform which runs the company’s Mac devices.
However, a new rumour has surfaced, suggesting that the upcoming macOS update may skip out on certain, older models. Citing people familiar with the matter, AppleInsider is reporting that the pre-release versions of macOS 26 (as it is tentatively known) is currently compatible with MacBook Pro 2019 or later, MacBook Air M1 or later, iMac 2020 or later, Mac Pro 2019 or later, Mac mini M1 or later, and finally all models of the Mac Studio.

Missing from the list are the 2018 MacBook Pro models, the 2020 Intel MacBook Air, the 2018 iMac Pro, and the 2018 Mac mini. All of which are also the oldest Mac devices currently supported by macOS Sequoia.
Newer firmware updates dropping compatibility with older models are not uncommon, so there’s a chance that this tip may be accurate. AppleInsider is vouching for its sources’ credibility, as they had previously provided accurate details about macOS Sequoia, iOS 18 and other Apple projects.

As for the upcoming macOS update itself, recent leaks suggest the platform – along with its smartphone and tablet counterparts – will receive a significant redesign that’s inspired by visionOS, the operating system for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Other features are yet to be revealed, and it is expected that we might see newer Apple Intelligence functions to be introduced as part of the mix.
