In an impromptu interview with Gamers Nexus’ Steve “Tech Jesus” Burke, ASRock made an admission of guilt to its motherboards burning out and damaging AMD Ryzen CPUs. To that end, it also says that it is offering full warranty support to customers affected by the issue.
As a quick primer, a report by Tech YES City in April pointed out that the majority of Ryzen 9000 Series were committing electrical seppuku with ASRock motherboards. ASRock initially brushed off the issue as debris having made its way into the AM5 socket, and gradually moved on to blaming the Zen5 CPU as the root cause of the issue, before ultimately discovering that it was the BIOS setting of their motherboard that was causing these untimely deaths.
Chris Lee, VP of the brand’s motherboard business, told Steve more specifically that the issue lay with the Electrical Design Current (EDC) within the Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) configuration, which it found to be too high. It has since released a BIOS patch that it believes solves the problem.
“So now, with BIOS version 3.25, we lowered the PBO values. We believe this can solve the problem.”
Again, ASRock said that it was fully committed to fixing any motherboards that were damaged and will even cover shipping costs. The problem here is that, if the motherboard issue was the root cause, and it was responsible for killing the Ryzen 9000 Series CPU, the burden of getting an RMA still fell into the hands on the consumer. And not the brand.
