Sony has introduced the FX2, a new addition to its Cinema Line series. Though featuring a similar build to the compact FX3 from 2021, the newer video-focused camera offers a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF), accompanied by internals from the brand’s Alpha 7 IV model which also debuted in the same year.
The new Sony FX2 packs a 33MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor – the same one that is also featured on the a7 IV. Combined with the Bionz XR processor, it enables up to 15 stops of dynamic range and offers Dual Base ISO (800 and 4000) when recording in S-Log3. The camera supports 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra recording and retains the ability to capture stills, even during video, in either JPEG or HEIF formats. Notably, it also includes a mechanical shutter to help reduce rolling shutter artefacts.
The FX2 includes a tilting 3.68M-dot electronic viewfinder, improving usability in various shooting positions, while the rear LCD is fully articulating and has a 1.03M-dot resolution. For anamorphic work, the camera offers de-squeeze options for 1.33x and 2x lenses.
The FX2 is tailored for video production with dedicated controls, including a movie/photo toggle, large record button, and multiple 1/4-inch mounts. It has a full-size HDMI port, a custom video-centric menu interface, and a built-in cooling fan for long-form shoots. Shutter angle control and support for the optional XLR handle round out the video-oriented feature set.
Autofocus is powered by Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF, which can identify people, animals, birds, insects, and vehicles. AI-powered auto-framing is also included, though it introduces a crop. A new Dynamic Active Mode further enhances stabilisation but also crops the image.
Recording in 4K at 60fps applies an APS-C crop, while full-width 4K capture is limited to 30fps. Additionally, external RAW recording is available at 4.7K resolution, though this requires an external recorder, as the internal CFexpress Type A slot doesn’t support RAW.

The FX2 is expected to arrive in August with two configurations: a body-only option priced at US$2,700 (~RM11,460) and a version bundled with the XLR handle for US$3,100 (~RM13,160). For Malaysia, the camera is confirmed to arrive in August this year while local pricing has yet to be announced.
