Apple will reportedly launch a dedicated gaming app to replace its current Game Center, as per Bloomberg via Android Authority. The purported app may come pre-installed on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs sometime later this year, corresponding with the expected launch of iOS 19.
The report states that the new gaming app will launch games and centralise user activity, achievements, leaderboards, communications, and more. It will apparently also promote the Apple Arcade subscription service, include editorial content and App Store gaming highlights, and support third-party games, even ones downloaded outside the Mac App Store.
If and when released, the Apple gaming app could potentially rival Google’s Play Games app. While the Google app has various positive features, including a substantial install base, Android Authority reports that it also has flaws including issues with syncing, including game progress, achievements and leaderboards. Game publishers also offer their accounts with features that serve as solutions to these issues.
Early testers of the app do not currently view it as a potential force in the gaming world, as alleged by Bloomberg. As mentioned, Apple is expected to launch it alongside the iOS 19, and the upcoming iPhone series launching in September.
