Malaysia has launched what is called the Strategic Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure, which was officiated by Deputy Comms Minister Teo Nie Ching. Despite the mundane sounding name, it is reportedly the first sovereign full-stack AI ecosystem in the region.

Bernama cites the deputy minister as saying that its launch “marks an important step in the country’s AI development”. With the infrastructure, it allows for LLMs like DeepSeek to be localised and hosted domestically. This in turn leads to data also being processed locally, safeguarding user privacy and data security. “It will be managed by Malaysians, and it will be used by Malaysians as well”, she said.

Also noted in the report is the platform being “designed to empower the government, businesses and universities to leverage AI in improving services, boosting productivity and driving innovation”. It’s powered by the AlterMatic DT250 AI server, with eight “high-end” but otherwise unspecified GPUs. Compared to industry peers, it offers 20% better performance and is 30% more energy efficient.

The launch of the Strategic AI Infratructure also marks the first deployment of chips and servers, as well as the DeepSeek LLM, outside of China. According to the report, this is a regional first as well. Early adopters include the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Communications, and University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), among others, which are said to be already onboard.
