At the Malaysian Auto Show (MAS 2025) last week, the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii) has introduced the Voluntary Next Generation Vehicle (NxGV) Labelling Scheme. It is a label on new vehicles that indicates the model name, level of autonomy, fuel consumption, and carbon emissions.

It is referred to as a milestone effort within the National Automotive Policy 2020 (NAP2020), which aims to accelerate Malaysia’s transition to green and intelligent transportation. The NxGV Labelling Scheme, which is a voluntary compliance and innovation framework, establishes a new standard for automobiles that satisfy sophisticated requirements in connection, automation (minimum Level 3), and energy efficiency.

‘’Vehicle labelling today must go beyond emissions, it must speak to intelligence, connectivity, and automation,” said Datuk Hanafi Sakri, the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). “Malaysia’s NxGV Labelling Scheme sets that standard. It reflects our commitment to position Malaysia, and by extension ASEAN, at the centre of the global shift towards sustainable and high technology mobility.”

“The NxGV label is more than a compliance badge, it’s a strategic signal of innovation, sustainability, and ASEAN leadership”, said Azrul Reza Aziz, CEO of MARii. It also helps Malaysia’s ambitious objective of reducing carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Moreover the labelling scheme supports national efforts to create a competitive NxGV ecosystem that encourages the use of green technologies, industrial digitalisation, and future mobility innovation. Additionally, it gives OEMs – such as automakers of electric and driverless cars – a strong weapon to set their technology apart in a changing local and regional market.
