Electric car automaker, Smart, has recently been gaining popularity among Malaysians with its models like the Smart #3. Yesterday, the company released a social media post about something new that is brewing for the Malaysian market.

From the post, it is safe to say that it is a teaser for the Smart #5. There’s also a possibility that the EV will be debuting or making an appearance during the upcoming 2025 Malaysia Autoshow (MAS 2025), according to automotive site Paultan.org.

The Smart #5 is not entirely brand new, as it is already available in China, and was first revealed in August 2024. There, the EV comes in Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) powertrains, as well as a Brabus variant.

The RWD comes in two versions: one delivering 340 PS (250 kW), while the other delivers 363 PS (267 kW). As for the AWD, the variant comes with a dual-motor configuration – one at the front and the other at the back.

For the normal AWD model, the front motor has 224 PS (165 kW), while the back motor delivers 363 PS, bringing the total to 587 PS (kW). Meanwhile, the Brabus variant has the same front motor, but its rear motor has a higher output of 421 PS (310 kW), which in total delivers 646 PS (475 kW).

A 76-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) unit is available for RWD models (CLTC ranges from 570 to 660 km), while a 100-kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery is available for AWD vehicles (ranges from 720 to 740 km CLTC). The Smart #5, unlike the other models, does not feature an SUV body style as it is built based on a PMA2+ platform with an 800V electrical architecture.

This architecture allows the car to adapt for DC fast charging at 4C speeds — the letter “C” stands for the number of times a battery can be charged in an hour. According to the automaker, just 15 minutes of charging is capable of providing 500 km of range to the car.

Stepping inside the car, one would feel as though they are in a high-tech cockpit. The reason behind this is the dashboard that is covered in screens, including the 10.3-inch driver’s display and the twin 2.5K 13-inch AMOLED infotainments for the centre and the passenger. Additionally, there’s a head-up display with augmented reality for the driver, as well as a 20-speaker Sennheiser sound system with a detachable portable unit.

No official information on the Smart #5’s pricing yet. However, if the model is actually being unveiled at the MAS 2025, then we will know more information about it then.
