On the eve of the Shanghai Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its latest electric concept MPV, the Vision V. While it’s technically still a concept, the German automaker promises the production version that’s due in 2026 will closely mirror what was shown at the event.

The MPV is built in he dedicated Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA) and one can say that it has a unique design. At the front, the vehicle features a distinctive illuminated Mercedes emblem and a sealed, shield-style grille and a light bar that crowns the grille.

Around the back, things get even more eye-catching. A full-width, ring-shaped taillight frames a wide glass panel, giving the rear a clean and modern look that one most probably have seen a sci-fi movie.

As for the interior, Mercedes describes it as a “private VIP lounge.” The Vision V trades the usual row seating for a more refined four-seat layout, designed with pure comfort and indulgence in mind.

The white Nappa leather, silk accents and wood trims, all tied together with striking glass elements in the interior of the Vison V. Meanwhile, transparent display cabinets are neatly set into polished aluminium frames along the cabin walls, reinforcing the sense of bespoke luxury.

Mercedes says the seating is inspired by first-class airline suites, complete with fully reclining seats and soft tubular cushions that flatten out into beds. An intuitive control panel sits within the central armrest, operating the vehicle’s infotainment system. And yes — there’s a folding table that cleverly transforms into a chessboard, with glass pieces neatly stored in those transparent cabinets.

Arguably the most futuristic touch is the electronically frosted glass partition between the front and rear sections. Not just for privacy, this clever panel forms part of a 65-inch retractable projection system. Seven hidden projectors, tucked into the ceiling and floor, work together to create an immersive entertainment zone. Even the side windows can act as screens.

This setup supports everything from movie nights to interactive gaming sessions. There’s also “exploration mode”, which projects real-time visuals of the surroundings inside the cabin, even if the windows are closed.

Looking ahead, Mercedes has revealed that this concept is the beginning of a new naming strategy for its electric MPVs. Production models will carry names like Mercedes-Benz VLS and VLE, with the “S” and “E” indicating their premium tier within the lineup. As mentioned earlier, these new models are expected to hit the road in 2026.
