Rumours have it that Intel’s next-generation Nova Lake, the successor to the current Arrow Lake desktop CPUs, may introduce a new socket LGA1954 design into the market. If true, this would mark LGA1851 as one of the shortest socket generations the chipmaker has used.
For context, the previous platform, socket LGA1200, was used for a total of three generations: Alder Lake, Raptor Lake, and Raptor Lake Refresh. Currently, Arrow Lake uses the LGA1851 platform and is expected to be recycled for another generation, Arrow Lake refresh, although analysts aren’t expecting much else from the upcoming generation, save perhaps a minor bump in performance.
Arrow Lake marked Intel’s shift away from the “Core iX” moniker, embracing the new “Core” and “Core Ultra” naming convention for the desktop processors. At launch, many reviewers, including ourselves, found the performance of the Core Ultra 200 Series to be just a tad underwhelming, given the chipmaker’s decision to prioritise power efficiency over raw performance.
Getting back on subject, Nova Lake isn’t likely to make an appearance until late next year. At this point, the only evidence that the desktop series exists is through shipping manifests listing the voltage regulator test equipment, which also indicated that the platform will continue supporting PCIe Gen5.
