While a Chinese university in the city of Shanghai recently made a breakthrough by creating the world’s smallest flash memory device, memory maker Biwin recently unveiled its own pint-sized flash storage device. On paper, the storage accessory is called the “Mini SSD”, which is apt, considering that it the size of a fingernail.
Despite having a diminutive size of 1.4mm, the Biwin Mini SSD boasts PCIe 4.0 average speeds. Well, more like PCIe 3.0 speeds, given that the advertised average sequential read and write speeds are 3,700MB/s and 3,400MB/s respectively but hey, the fact that a microSD-sized component is able to reach speeds like that is no less impressive.
As for storage capacity, Biwin says that the Mini SSD offers capacities of up to 2TB. Not only that, but it’s also low power, utilising a dynamic SLC caching that also allows it to maintain high output. As for the use case, its modular design also means that the the memory can easily be soldered on to the PCB of an ultrabook, freeing up space within the already compact system and therefore allowing manufacturers to install other physical features on it.
