The Ministry of Communications has ordered the temporary closure of the Kuala Lumpur Tower starting today on 17 April 2025, citing concerns over visitor safety and comfort. In a recent statement, it declared that Menara Kuala Lumpur Sdn Bhd’s (MKLSB) continued occupation of the Kuala Lumpur Tower premises beyond 31 March this year is unlawful.
The ministry emphasised that the government retains ownership of the iconic landmark, whereas operations, management and maintenance have officially been handed over to LSH Service Master Sdn Bhd, a unit under Lim Seong Hai Capital Bhd, effective 1 April 2025. It elaborated that the closure was necessary “in the interest of visitor safety and comfort” and to allow the new concessionaire time to perform essential maintenance and improvement work.
The ministry stressed that any operations or transactions conducted by MKLSB beyond March 31 lack official sanction. It added that two eviction notices had been issued to MKLSB by the Federal Land Commissioner on 3 and 9 April 2025.
According to The Edge Malaysia, the ongoing dispute stems from a legal conflict between LSH and Hydroshoppe Sdn Bhd, which acquired the MKLSB from Telekom Malaysia in October 2022. Although the former was awarded a 20-year concession by the government in March, the latter has continued to operate the premises despite failing to obtain an interim injunction to halt the award, deepening the standoff.
No date has been set for KL Tower’s reopening at this time. The comms ministry said that an announcement will be made through various social media channels once the decision has been made.
