Netflix is reportedly testing a new search feature powered by OpenAI. This will allow the user to search for shows using far more specific terms (including the user’s mood), as well as enable users to make queries that go well beyond actors’ names or genres, although it is unclear what exactly that entails.
Currently, the OpenAI-powered ability has been made available to some users in Australia and New Zealand on iOS, with Netflix planning to expand the test to subscribers in the US in the coming weeks and months. At the moment, the search feature is opt-in, which means that users have the choice whether they want to test it out. There’s no word on whether the AI enhancements will also see a rollout in other regions across the globe, however.

According to the Verge, Netflix has no plans to implement the new AI search feature outside of iOS. However, Netflix spokesperson MoMo Zhou stated that the feature is in its early days and that the company is in a “learn and listen phase” for the beta.
Netflix is no stranger to using AI as the company has had a long history of implementing machine learning to its systems. Co-CEO Greg Peters claimed that it is the company’s responsibility to be proactive in recognizing technical innovation and understanding how to use it to better serve creators and the users.
