After much delay and the challenges of getting the all-electric Volvo SUV to dealerships globally, the EX90 is launched for the Malaysian market by Volvo Cars Malaysia (VCM). As we reported before, the car was launched alongside its plug-in hybrid twin, the XC90.

The Volvo EX90 is priced at RM442,888 on-the-road without insurance, which is RM8,000 more than the new Volvo XC90 PHEV version. At the moment, it is fully imported (CBU); however, VCM has confirmed that locally assembled (CKD) units will be arriving later this year.

Now, for the extra RM8,000 that you will be paying, this is what you will be getting. For starters, the Malaysian market is getting the fully specced  EX90 Ultra Twin that can accommodate up to seven people in a 2-2-3 seating layout.

Moreover, the Volvo EX90 is built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform and features an electric powertrain capable of delivering up to 623 km of range according to the WLTP standard. This range is made possible by a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery with a gross energy capacity of 111kWh (107kWh net), which powers a pair of electric motors in an all-wheel-drive setup.

The Twin Motor Performance version reduces the sprint time to 4.9 seconds and delivers up to 380kW (510hp) and 910Nm of torque. As is customary with Volvo, the top speed is limited to 180 km/h for safety.

The EX90 is a sleek, futuristic extension of Volvo’s iconic design. It features 1.3 million pixel high-definition headlights with dynamic brightness adjustment for optimal visibility, Thor’s Hammer DRLs, and a closed-off front grille bearing the Iron Mark.

The interior boasts a 14.5-inch tablet-style infotainment screen with Google built-in, a 9-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 13.2-inch head-up display. Audiophiles will appreciate the 25-speaker, 1610W Bowers & Wilkins sound system, which includes a subwoofer and even headrest speakers for the front seats.

Now comes the important part—charging. The Volvo EX90 supports AC charging, allowing the car to be charged from 0–100% in 10 hours with its 11kW onboard charger. This is somewhat underwhelming, considering that many competitors offer higher AC charging rates. However, the fast DC charging support of up to 250kW enables the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in just half an hour.

If there is one thing Volvo is known for, it’s safety—and the EX90 is no exception. Along with twin front, side, inner side, curtain, and driver’s knee airbags, the vehicle also features an integrated booster cushion, an interior radar for occupant detection, and ISOFIX mounting points.

Moreover, it comes equipped with numerous driver assistance features such as collision avoidance and mitigation, oncoming mitigation by braking, steering avoidance (with pedestrian, cyclist, and scooter detection), and rear collision warning and avoidance. In addition to cameras and radars, it has a state-of-the-art LIDAR sensor mounted on the roof, capable of detecting objects up to 250 metres ahead—even in total darkness.

Lastly, the purchase of this Volvo EX90 comes with 5-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, 8-year/160,000km high-voltage battery warranty, 24-hour roadside support, and five years of free digital services. Additionally, VCM is giving out a free panoramic roof sunshade and a wallbox voucher worth RM5,000 to the first 50 Volvo EX90 purchasers.
