If you’ve been on X, previously Twitter, on the regular, then you may have faced some difficulty browsing the site or scrolling through the app starting around 10PM last night. At the time, it’s unclear what was the issue or what caused it, but since then platform owner Elon Musk has found something to point the finger at.
In an interview with Fox Business, Musk says that the platform suffered “a massive cyberattack to try to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating in the Ukraine area”. No further details or explanation was provided, as the rest of the interview goes on about what happens behind-the-scenes at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with some mention of protests Tesla was facing as a company.
Musk also posted on his own platform that this particular cyberattack that slowed the platform to a crawl “was done with a lot of resources”. He further implies that “either a large, coordinated group and / or a country is involved”. Unfortunately, at least at the time of writing, there have been no follow-ups to shed further light on these implications, especially when mentioning Ukraine the in the aforementioned interview.
It probably doesn’t directly impact us living on the opposite half of the globe, but it looks like there’s a lot of political manoeuvring going on. Separately though, Newsweek reports that a pro-Palestinian hacker group known as Dark Storm Team has claimed responsibility for the DDoS of X.
