Many have assumed that Olympus’ iconic Pen line was quietly discontinued, especially since its apparent successor, the E-P7, was released only in Japan and Europe two years ago. However, recent developments suggest that OM System has not forgotten about it, reigniting hope for its future.
Speaking to PetaPixel at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, the company provided a rare insight into its plans for the Pen series. OM System vice president of brand strategy and product planning Kazuhiro Togashi made it clear that the newly announced OM-3 is not a replacement or successor to the Pen lineup.
“Of course, we consider the Pen series an important part of our company,” Togashi said. “We are studying its past success and actively exploring the possibility of a new Pen model.”

The discussion also touched on industry trends, particularly the shift in compact camera design. Many manufacturers have been removing electronic viewfinders or modifying interfaces to cater to smartphone users, as seen in models like the Sigma BF. When asked whether OM System would follow suit, Togashi indicated a balanced approach.
“We are considering both sides of market demand,” he said. “Our priority is ensuring photographers enjoy using the camera.”

Togashi insisted that the company wants to expand to new users who may primarily use smartphones, but also have an interest in standalone cameras. The next Pen concept is being developed with this in mind, he added.
While the specifics remain uncertain, OM System’s remarks strongly suggest that the Pen series is not only still in consideration but also actively being reimagined. However, given the early stage of discussions, a new model may still be some time away.
