Malaysia has become the first country to achieve the signing of a six-way 4G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) sharing agreement, according to communications minister Fahmi Fadzil. While the agreement was actually signed last May, the major telcos have just launched a pilot project for the concept in several locations.

The telcos involved in this project are CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM, and YTL Communications. Fahmi stated that the implementation of the project aimed to improve connectivity in areas with limited internet coverage and that this is the first instance in the world to facilitate all telco companies collaborating in this manner.

The five locations for the six-way 4G MOCN are Ikon Tengkolok, Bukit Putus, and Kem Pengakap Bukit Putus (Negeri Sembilan), Prima Gambang (Pahang), West Coast Expressway Kota Seri Langat Toll Plaza Banting (Selangor), and Tanjung Asam (Penang). Fahmi added that this initiative demonstrates that telcos in the country could collaborate to provide better internet access in remote areas.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has set out principles and guidelines for the implementation of an MOCN, aiming to improve connectivity at highways, public universities, hospitals, event venues, tourist spots, stadiums, and military and police installations. The network focuses on Passive Infrastructure Sharing, which involves sharing physical components such as towers and poles without involving electronic or network components, and Active Infrastructure Sharing, which refers to sharing electronic components and signal processing within the network to enhance efficiency.
