Google has announced a long list of new security features for Android 15 along with the second beta for the upcoming update. Most of them will be packaged together with the OS update but one of the most interesting features is actually coming to older Android devices as well.
The highlight of the announcement is definitely the new anti-theft protection measures that will be added to Android. One of which is called Theft Detection Lock, which uses AI to detect when your phone has been snatched and will quickly lock the device. There’s also Offline Device Lock, which locks the phone if it recognises that a thief has tried to disconnect the device for a prolonged period or has made multiple failed authentication attempts.
While Find My Device can already let you track your phone in real time, the update will also allow you to lock the phone remotely through the app or website. Other new security measures include an upgraded factory reset procedure, a “Private Space” which is essentially a vault for apps with sensitive data, password protection for disabling Find My Device, and biometric authentication for changing crucial device or account settings.
The anti-theft feature as well as the remote lock in Find My Device will be coming to devices with Android 10 and up later this year through a Google Play services update. All the other new security features mentioned will be exclusive to Android 15, which is expected to roll out this fall.
