Yesterday, Apple rolled out the new iOS 17.5 update which introduced a new cross-platform Bluetooth tracker detector developed with Google. However, the update might have also brought about a new bug in which old deleted photos could resurface in your gallery.
According to one user on Reddit, they discovered several old photos in their gallery that suddenly reappeared. These included some NSFW pictures as well as artwork, which they insist were permanently deleted years ago.
Following this, a user on the same post commented that they found four deleted photos from 2010 in iCloud. Another user said, “I have a small number of photos from 2016 which are suddenly at the end of my Recents. I don’t think these are ones I deleted. It is a weird bug.” Last week, iOS beta testers reported a similar issue. Given that there are numerous other commenters on the post claiming to experience this bug, it is likely not an isolated incident.
Usually, how it works is that when you delete something in the Photos app, it will be moved to a “Recently Deleted” folder and it will stay there for 30 days before it is deleted permanently. It is still uncertain how many are affected by this bug or how is it occurring, but it is certainly concerning how photos that were purportedly “permanently” deleted are still kept somewhere in iCloud’s servers.
