Malaysian banks, under the ambit of the Association of Banks in Malaysia (ABM) and Association of Islamic Banking and Financial Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM), reignited their conviction to educate and make consumers aware of financial scams via the refreshed #JanganKenaScam awareness campaign. Then as now, the goal of the campaign is the help the public combat financial scams and fraudulent banking activities.

The #JanganKenaScam campaign comes after the banking industry, which includes major financial institutions such as Maybank, banded together to implement new safeguards and tools to fight off fraud, including the migration away from One-Time Passwords (OTP), imposing a cool-off period for first-time online banking registrations, and implementing a killswitch for compromised accounts, among other things.

“While security and technology measures are important, public awareness remains our strongest defence. Indeed, educating the public against scams is an ongoing effort that must go on. I commend the private sector’s work in coordinating industry-wide anti-scam strategies through its industry taskforce. Such industry-led initiatives are testament to the private sector’s high level of commitment,” Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, Governor, Bank Negara Malaysia, said during his opening address at the launch of the campaign.

As part of the #JanganKenaScam campaign, the banking industry also opened up a new website, www.jangankenascam.com, where visitors can learn about the many different scams and phishing tactics that scammers are likely to employ, in their effort to gain unlawful access into your bank accounts. The site also includes interactive games that are loaded with lessons but at the time of writing, those resources are still currently “under construction”, so you will need to check back on it at a later date.

“The public will also have an opportunity to experience the #JanganKenaScam Fest at various locations nationwide, starting with the Minggu Saham Amanah Malaysia (MSAM) in Bertam, Penang from now until 8 October 2023 and coming soon in 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya from 15 to 19 November 2023. Joining in is brand ambassador Hairul Azreen, who will feature in selected legs of the #JanganKenaScam Fest.”
