Nikon has issued a recall for faulty units of its new Z8 full-frame camera in certain regions including Japan, the US, Europe and Australia. According to the service advisory notice shared on the company’s regional websites, it has been discovered that a rare defect is causing affected units to not mount lenses properly as they cannot be rotated to the locked position.

It is unconfirmed whether certain Z8 cameras sold locally are also plagued by this particular defect, since Nikon Malaysia has not issued a recall or published an announcement so far. Regardless, there is actually a way to check whether or not your unit is affected by this issue.

As mentioned in the notice, Nikon says it has identified a range of serial numbers belonging to Z8 cameras which may have the defect. To help users determine whether their unit is affected, the company has set up a special page that lets them submit its serial number for verification. On that note, you can find your Z8’s 7-digit number printed on a label affixed to the compartment behind its vari-angle LCD screen.

Should your camera fall under this category, the special page will display necessary instructions on how you can request for repairs. Nikon says affected Z8 units will be serviced at no cost, even if the warranty for it has expired.

Additionally, the company is also advising customers to direct their inquiries regarding this issue to their nearest Nikon service centre. For Malaysia, Nikon’s official local distributor Futuromic Photo AV Sdn Bhd tells us that there’s currently only one location in the country at this time, so this might be troublesome for Z8 owners that are not located in the Klang Valley. Nevertheless, below is the service centre’s address and contact number:

Futuromic Photo AV Sdn Bhd (service)
16, Jalan PJU 5/16, PJU 5, Dataran Sunway, Kota Damansara, Petaling Jaya, 47810, Malaysia
Tel: +60 3 6156 6633
