AMD officially pulled back the curtain on its Ryzen 7040U Series processors for its mobile range. First announced back at CES 2023, the new mobile CPU series is the chipmaker’s latest and most powerful mobile processors designed for the ultrathin mobile and laptop market.

The Ryzen 7040U Series is also the first lineup in AMD’s portfolio to be paired with its AMD Ryzen AI technology. The general specifications of the new series includes being centred around the brand’s latest Zen4 architecture but more importantly, its integrated graphics module is made up from RDA3 Compute Units. That’s mildly impressive, given that the current range of Ryzen 7000 Series processors only have RDNA2-based graphics cores.

Officially known as the Radeon 700M Series, the integrated graphics come in three SKUs: Radeon 780M for Ryzen 7 and 9 7040U Series CPUs, 760M for Ryzen 5, and 740M for Ryzen 3 models. The maximum frequency for these GPUs is 2.7GHz, with a peak performance of 8.6 TFLOPs.

As for the Ryzen 7040U SKUs, AMD is releasing four of them. Starting from the bottom, the Ryzen 3 7440U is a 4-cores, 8-threads unit with a base and boost clock of 3GHz and 4.7GHz respectively and has a 12MB Cache. Moving up the latter, the Ryzen 5 segment comes in two segments: 7540U and 7640U.

Both the Ryzen 5 7540U and 7640U have a 6-cores, 12-threads configuration, 22MB Cache, and are able to boost to 4.9GHz, but the former has a lower base clock of 3.2GHz, while the former is slightly higher at 3.5GHz. Sitting at the top of the pyramid of hierarchy is the Ryzen 7 7840U. Featuring 8-cores and 16-threads, the CPU has a base and boost clock of 3.3GHz and 5.1GHz respectively, as well as the biggest cache size at 24MB.

Another important point to note is that, of the four Ryzen 7040U Series CPUs listed, only the Ryzen 5 7640U and Ryzen 7 7840U support Ryzen AI. That aside, AMD says that all four 7040U CPUs are designed to deliver “exceptional” battery life of up to 30 hours on a single charge, although that is yet to be seen or tested.
