There is now a new rumour currently circulating online about Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen3. Supposedly the yet-to-be-announced mobile chipset is expected to be 50% faster than the current king-of-the-hill SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen2. To put that in another way, it’s the sort of performance that will outpace even Apple’s current own chipset, the A16 Bionic.

The alleged performance boost of the 8 Gen3 over the Gen2 was first posted by “数码闲聊站” on Weibo. Now, it goes without saying that these details should be taken with a very large grain of salt, but that the SoC could actually have a 50% uplift in performance isn’t too far-fetched. The 8 Gen2, for instance, is already proven to be significantly faster and more powerful than the 8 Gen1, which made its debut back in 2022. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen2, the SoC could maintain framerates in some games such as COD Mobile, while more GPU-intensive titles like the popular Genshin Impact actually give the SoC’s Adreno 740 GPU a run for its money.

As far as internal specs go, the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 is rumoured to be an octa-core SoC but will be using a new 1+5+2 core configuration, as opposed to the 1+4+3 configuration that’s used with current and previous generation SoCs. Breaking it down further, that’s one X4 mega-core that is supposedly running at 3.75GHz, five A720 performance cores clocked at 3GHz, and two A520 efficiency cores clocked at 2GHz. In addition, the chipset is expected to be manufactured and based on TSMC’s N4P node. It’s still based on the 5nm process but is essentially more efficient and powerful than the standard N4 node.

As to when we can expect Qualcomm will be launching the Snapdragon 8 Gen3 SoC, it is likely that the chipmaker will be making the announcement during its annual event at Hawaii. Fingers crossed, we’ll be there to cover the launch.
