Lamborghini will bid farewell to its pure combustion engine automotive lineup later this year, according to Bloomberg. This follows up on the luxury sports car manufacturer’s announcement which was made last year, where it plans to release plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) by 2023, before going all-electric starting 2024 onwards.

“It will be the last time that we only offer combustion engines,” revealed Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann in an interview. In addition, he said that the brand has almost sold out its entire production run in 2021, with record deliveries of 8,405 vehicles globally.

The Volkswagen-owned luxury sports car manufacturer plans to unveil four new car models in 2022, and is still working on a final design for its first electric car. Interestingly, Winkelmann also noted that the all-electric model will be a four-door model “suited for daily use” rather than the brand’s usual coupe supercar offerings. Bloomberg adds that Lamborghini has allocated a record EUR 1.5 billion (~RM 7.1 billion) for the shift to plug-in hybrids.

Speaking of which, the company already has several PHEV offerings in its current lineups. These include the Lamborghini Sián FKP 37, and the limited edition Countach LPI 800-4 (shown on top) which was launched in August of last year. It is expected that the brand’s upcoming hybrid releases will consist of successors to the Urus, Huracan, and Aventador models.
