Microsoft: We Stopped Making Xbox One To Focus On Series X, S

But does Microsoft have the parts to do so when Sony doesn't?

We’ve recently seen reports of Sony deciding to extend the production of its PS4 to ease pressure from the demand for the PS5. The company claims that there just aren’t enough components to make the newer console, even if it offered to pay more money for them. Microsoft has taken the opposite approach.

In a statement to The Verge, Cindy Walker, senior director of Xbox console product marketing, said that “To focus on production of Xbox Series X / S, we stopped production for all Xbox One consoles by the end of 2020”. Which is nothing new; the company announced the discontinuation of the Xbox One X and the digital edition of the Xbox One S even before the launch of the current generation consoles.

Of course, focusing on making Xbox Series X and S consoles doesn’t necessarily mean Microsoft has the resources to actually do so. In other words, it will still be as difficult to get a Series X console as it is to get a PS5, in markets where they are officially sold. Unless the company knows something that Sony doesn’t.

Overall, it doesn’t look like the shortage of current generation consoles will be going away anytime soon. And the decisions and statements from these two companies simply reinforce the fact that, as far as the previous console generation is concerned, one is more successful than the other.
