The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) has announced that it is working together with major telcos to provide comprehensive and affordable “Keluarga Malaysia” packages to meet the technological needs of varsity students and low-income families. The move arrives just in time as schools and universities are planned to soon reopen, while also aiming to fulfill the target demographic’s needs for entertainment and to facilitate the growth of e-commerce in the country.

For students, there’s the Pakej Remaja Keluarga Malaysia which is a prepaid plan for teenagers and university students. The plan costs RM30 for three months of use and comes with 20GB of data, plus the daily 1GB “productivity” data allocation. Those under the age of 21 are required to use their MyKad to sign up, while those older will need to use their student cards.

The second package is geared towards providing families with 4G and VoLTE capable devices. Dubbed the Pakej Peranti Keluarga Malaysia, the devices under this package will start at RM40 per month and families will have monthly-instalment plans of between 12 to 24 months. This plan also includes the daily 1GB data, and those eligible can subscribe to a maximum of two devices using the same IC.

No details have been released so far of what devices will be provided or which households exactly will be eligible for the family package. Registration opens on 15 October for six months until 15 April 2022, though we don’t know yet which telcos are expected to be participating in the Keluarga Malaysia Initiative.

As a reminder, Malaysia will be shutting down its entire 3G network by 31 December this year, with MCMC’s JENDELA plan aiming to migrate more than 900,000 users with 3G-only phones to using 4G devices. To that end, even SIRIM has stopped certifying 3G-only devices earlier this year.
