As per its announcement that was made last week, Huawei today has officially launched its brand new nova 8 smartphone in Malaysia. It is worth noting that although most of the specifications of the device are mostly no different from the original Chinese release, it does feature a different Kirin chipset. More on that later.

The Huawei nova 8 comes with a curved 6.57-inch FHD+ OLED display with a refresh rate of 90Hz, under-display fingerprint sensor, and a punch-hole cutout for its selfie camera. As mentioned earlier, it is also equipped with a Kirin 820E chipset instead of the Kirin 985 that was included together with the model that was launched in China last year. Despite exhibiting lower performance than the latter, Huawei touts the chip to produce less heat under intense processing situations such as gaming. Along with the Kirin SoC is paired with a RAM capacity of 8GB and storage space of 128GB.

Power-wise, the new phone is equipped with a 3,800mAh battery. Huawei claims that the phone is able to top-up 100% capacity in just 35 minutes via its onboard 66W USB-C fast charging support. Other features found on the nova 8 includes 4G LTE connectivity, NFC and Bluetooth 5.0 support, as well as the brand’s own Harmony OS via its EMUI 12 interface.

In terms of photography, found on the back of the new smartphone is a quad-camera setup which consists of a 64MP f/1.9 main, 8MP ultra-wide, and dual 2MP sensors for depth and macro shots. Housed within its display’s punch-hole cutout is a 32MP selfie camera. For videos, Huawei says that the nova 8 is capable of recording up to 4K footage, along with numerous video modes such as time-lapse, slo-mo and so on.

In conjunction with its launch, Huawei is also offering customers a variety of free gifts for each purchase of the handset while stocks last. These include an entertainment gift box, a Huawei exclusive voucher, 1 week of Joox VIP access, and 1 month of 200GB Huawei Cloud Storage.
