Snapchat Launches Spotlight As Direct Competitor To TikTok

Snapchat has officially lifted the veil from its new feature, Spotlight. Designed to function similar to ByteDance’s TikTok, the new in-app feature will enable all Snapchat users to record vertical videos, just with more hilarity within it.

To entice users to the post more “Snaps” on the new feature, Snapchat also announced that it will put up and spread US$1 million (~RM4.09 million) between the most popular creators on Spotlight, starting from today until the end of the year. Simply put, so long as a Snapchat user is able to create a viral video with Spotlight, they could very well end up walking away with a significant portion of the pie.

As an extra added bonus, the Snapchat user doesn’t even need to have a massive number of subscribers, since the amount received by each individual really depends on the number of unique views their viral video receives on a day to day basis. On that note, if the video happens to be really popular, users can continue to earn from said video for several days at a time.

Naturally, there are some differences between Spotlight and its direct competitor. As a start, the in-app feature won’t have a public comments section and user profiles are set to private by default.

At the time of writing, Spotlight will be launching in 11 countries, including the US, UK, France, Germany, and Australia. In addition, the videos recorded can be as long as 60 seconds but still cannot be watermarked for the moment. The last feature seems to be by design, so as to prevent people from pilfering viral videos posted on TikTok and uploading them to Snapchat’s own platform.
