The COVID-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO) that followed earlier in the year changed our video-watching habits on YouTube. And Google has shared what that change looks like with some YouTube data that the company shared.
To start, Google says that YouTube watch times have gone up by 35%. And to break them down by genre, game video views have gone up by five times. This is followed by finance related videos, which has gone up by over four times. Finally, baking videos have also more than doubled.
These go pretty well with the trend that we saw during the stricter phases of the MCO. As people stayed at home, interest in video games, as well as finance and culinary-related topics have gone up. This data from YouTube probably matches the increase in related posts that you’ve observed on social media. Beyond those, Google also says that consumer electronics and clips from romance movies have also doubled.
Granted, these are not the most up to date figures, as they reflect the numbers between April and June this year. But it’s an interesting look into our country’s YouTube viewing habits during a period of time when most of us were stuck at home.
