Xiaomi recently said that its plans to create its own mobile chipset is still on the table and currently ongoing. Its CEO, Lei Jun, said that neither he nor his company has given up on its plan to design its own chips and by extension reduce its reliance on third-party chip makers.
Jun confirmed this via a post on his official Weibo account, where he also said that he would answer questions regarding the future of his brand’s Mi MIX lineup, the Mi MIX Alpha, and the brand’s in-house chipset.
As a quick refresher, this isn’t Xiaomi’s first time delving into the possibility of making its own chipset. Back in 2017, the Chinese brand unveiled the Surge S1, a 28nm octa-core chipset that was more or less on par with other mid-range SoCs available at that time. Unfortunately, that was also the first and last time any news of a new Xiaomi-branded chipset was heard. At least, in the smartphone market segment.
There’s also the possibility that Xiaomi’s sudden mention of its chipset development may have something to do with the ongoing trade war between China and the US; due to the sanctions imposed on the former, China began rolling out several new tax incentives to chipmakers in its own country.
