Films, especially giant fantasy franchises are always scattered with Easter eggs. Sometimes, they’re a little obvious — like the Spider-Man mural in the Morbius trailer. Other times, you’ll need to have deeper background knowledge to be able to catch it. For example, Chewbacca getting the medal from Maz Kanata was a clear reference to years of fans complaining that Chewie did not receive a medal from Princess Leia at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope. But sometimes, the Easter egg is so subtly incorporated that only those with the sharpest of eyes and great ability to recall tiny details will be able to catch it.
One of it, is the name of John Boyega’s character in the new Star Wars trilogy. As we know, Boyega’s character was a stormtrooper with the number FN-2187. When he meets Poe in The Force Awakens, the fighter pilot decides that he should have a name and calls him Finn. But did you know that FN-2187 is actually an Easter Egg?
It was revealed on the Star Wars official Twitter account that the number ‘2187’ is actually a reference to a tiny detail in A New Hope.
“Finn’s stormtrooper number was FN-2187. The # is a homage to cell 2187 located in detention block AA-23 on the Death Star, the cell of Princess Leia in A New Hope. Cell 2187 from ANH is a ref. to “21-87” a National Film Board of Canada short that inspired a young George Lucas.”
