Redmi has been sharing early details of its upcoming K30 smartphone ahead of its 10 December launch in China. In a recent post on Weibo, the company has confirmed that the phone’s quad-camera setup will include a 64MP main camera, which features Sony’s new IMX686 sensor that was teased a while back.

Together with the official announcement, Redmi also provided a video showcasing the capabilities of the K30’s 64MP main camera. The video shows a still image of Wang Yibo, Redmi K30’s celebrity ambassador, with several miniatures placed around him. Redmi claims that the image was taken with the K30’s 64MP camera and further proves its quality by zooming into each part of the image, which showcases the fine details in close-up.

As shown in the IMX686 teaser prior to this, the sensor is claimed to be capable of capturing delivering high dynamic range of great detail in various conditions. This includes landscapes, portraits, and even low-light environments. We’ve yet to see how the latter performs with the sensor equipped on the Redmi K30.

At this time, other confirmed specifications of the new Redmi phone include having a 6.67-inch display with an oval punch-hole consisting of two selfie cameras, a Snapdragon 765G chipset paired with Snapdragon X55 5G modem, and a battery capacity of 4500mAh.

The K30 is the first smartphone to be equipped with Sony’s new IMX686, and it’s expected that a slew of upcoming phones from other brands will follow suit. While Samsung’s 108MP sensor is indeed impressive for smartphone photography, it will most likely be featured in flagship level smartphones. With that said, Sony’s sensor would likely be a more affordable and great main camera candidate for midrange or certain flagship smartphones in 2020.

As mentioned earlier, the Redmi K30 is slated for a full reveal during its 10 December launch in China. Redmi has yet to announce any plans for a global launch after that.
