The final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be hitting cinemas in just a couple of weeks. The pressure is on. Director JJ Abrams and co-screenwriter Chris Terio not only need to wrap up multiple decades worth of Star Wars stories, they also need to answer burning questions that were brought up in this new Disney era sequel trilogy. Are Rey’s parents really nobodies? Was Kylo Ren lying? Will Kylo Ren be redeemed? What has Palpatine been up to all this while? Why has he returned? Are Finn and Poe gay?
Speaking of, Vanity Fair recently had a chat with JJ Abrams on an unexpected but important angle of the movie’s screenplay: Finn and Poe’s past. The Rise of Skywalker director said that he will be exploring each of their pasts in the film.
[Finn’s history] is part of the story of this one. And it was alluded to in Episode VII, but there’s a bit more light shed on that in this one…I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories. I’m not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn’s past, about Poe’s past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.
I don’t know if it’s even possible for JJ Abrams and Chris Terio to answer every single question that is brought up in previous movies. However, it certainly looks like their going to try their damndest.
Endings are very difficult because they need to take everything that’s come before, in this case eight films prior, and draw it to a close. So I wanted to make sure in addition to the central story, the main character or characters, I wanted to make sure that you felt that when you were done with this film, you felt like you had some more insight into all of them. That was really important to us.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas this 19 December.
