Zoe Kravitz to Play Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is coming together nicely, at least in terms of casting. About two months ago, it was confirmed that the brilliant helmer of War For the Planet of the Apes had cast Robert Pattinson in the role of Gotham’s Dark Knight. Since then, we’ve been getting plenty of rumours and reports surrounding the casting of other characters. It’s been reported that Jonah Hill is in talks to play the iconic Batman villain, The Riddler, while Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) is pencilled in as Commissioner Gordon. While those aren’t confirmed yet, we do however have confirmation on who’s going to be playing another Batman villain/anti-hero — Catwoman.

Variety reports that Zoe Kravitz has landed the role of Selina Kyle/Catwoman, beating out finalists Zazie Beetz (who interestingly enough starred in another DC film currently in cinemas, Joker) as well as Eiza Gonzalez (Jon Hamm’s girlfriend in Baby Driver). Per Variety:

Kravitz will star opposite Robert Pattinson as Batman.

In recent weeks, the role came down to Kravitz, Zazie Beetz of Atlanta, Deadpool 2 and Joker, Baby Driver’s Eiza Gonzalez and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander. Ultimately, Kravitz won out, despite some worry about scheduling issues with Fantastic Beasts.

Catwoman has been a mainstay in the Batman comics for as long as I can remember. Not only that, the character is so interesting — badass, vicious, intelligent, morally ambiguous and oozes sex appeal — that it has been brought to life on the big screen numerous times. The character has been played by Michelle Pfeiffer in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, Anne Hathaway in Christopher Nolan’s grounded and realistic The Dark Knight Rises and Halle Berry in a movie that I wish I could permanently wipe out from my mind.

Zoe Kravitz is an actress of tremendous charisma. While some of the films she’s starred in recently hasn’t been noteworthy (Rough Night, Fantastic Beasts), one only needs to watch HBO’s Big Little Lies to see what she’s actually capable of.  I’m confident that Reeves’ The Batman will be the perfect canvas for her to showcase her ample talent. Kravitz previously voiced Catwoman in The Lego Batman Movie.

The Batman will begin filming either later this year or early 2020 and is set for a summer 2021 release.
