In a previous article, we covered the Russo brothers’ take on the controversial decision to ultimately make Sam Wilson the new Captain America. The directing duo discussed how they ultimately went with Sam because his ethics mirror Captain America’s. However, fans have theorised that in-story, Steve actually offered the mantle to his childhood best friend, Bucky Barnes first.
The theory isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility. After all, when Steve comes back to the prime timeline as an old man, Bucky reacts in a manner that suggests he already knows what lies ahead. However, it looks like the theory is only partially true. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if Steve Rogers first offered the mantle of Captain America to Bucky Barnes, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had this to say:
“Steve never offered the mantle to Bucky. That’s not our intent, no. It’s just honouring their relationship. Steve, clearly, before he stepped on that platform … told Bucky what he was going to do. Whether he knew he was going to appear on that bench, I don’t think so. Why would Bucky say, ‘I’m going to miss you pal,’ if it was only going to be five seconds?”
So, it’s settled then. Sam Wilson will be the next Captain America. Well deserved if you ask me.
Avengers: Endgame is currently playing in Malaysian cinemas.
