Facebook has plans to allow group admins to charge users for access. A new subscription group option is being rolled out in a small pilot programme; and will provide tools for users who want to hide content behind a paywall.
The option for subscriptions is supposedly “part of our overall approach to helping creators and leaders to financially support the work they do to engage their fans and communities.” Facebook also goes on to say that there are many groups that already engage in a similar practice, but use third party tools and solutions to keep track of payments.
Essentially, Facebook is claiming that it only wants to streamline the effort of maintaining subscriptions to groups. Although the announcement doesn’t quite say how the profits will be split between the group admin and the social media company.
The pilot programme is an opportunity for Facebook to learn more about how people respond to the subscriptions. Saying that it will continue to improve the experience and allow content creators to provide more engagement for their communities.
