Twitter has shut down its Mac-based client, and is now directing Mac users towards its browser based site. The app itself is no longer available on the Apple App store, with support supposedly ending in 30 days from the announcement.
Mac users have expressed mixed feelings towards the removal of the app. Some worry that this could spell doom for other Mac-based Twitter clients like Tweetdeck, while others are more than relieved to see the problematic app go away. Shortly before its removal, Twitter for Mac had an impressive rating of 1.5 stars out of five.
We’re focusing our efforts on a great Twitter experience that’s consistent across platforms. So, starting today the Twitter for Mac app will no longer be available for download, and in 30 days will no longer be supported.

In all fairness, Twitter has always lacked the will to keep its Mac app updated and running. The app itself was originally a third party application that Twitter bought over, and has since barely supported.
There’s no indication that a new app is being relased, with Twitter saying that it is focusing efforts “on a great Twitter experience that’s consistent across all platforms.” Which could sound ominous for those who have just had their apps taken away from them.
