Even though virtual reality is mainly associated with entertainment, the technology has been adopted in many fields ranging from engineering to medical world. In Indonesia, some circumcision clinics – rather common in the country who has the largest Muslim population in the world – have embraced virtual reality as well.
In a tweet by Risky Febrian, a Mobile Phone Analyst at IDC Indonesia, virtual reality is one of the additional service offered by a clinic chain called Rumah Sunatan which has 40 branches throughout Indonesia. A quick search also showed that the same option is available at other circumcision clinics in the country as well.
The way the tech is being utilized at these clinics is not exactly ground breaking though. In general, it was used as a way to distract their young patients by showing VR contents on a mobile phone VR headset while they go through the circumcision procedure.
Nevertheless, it is still an interesting use case. In a way, it added a modern flavor to the procedure which has existed since the time of ancient Egypt.
