The Apple Watch is a very popular smartwatch that has plenty of features inside. It can track movements, check your heart rate, keep you connected, and many more. However, there’s one very important feature that is sorely lacking – sleep tracking, and it looks like that might change in the future. Apple recently acquired Beddit, a company that builds sleep tracking hardware that is compatible with apps on iOS and the Apple Watch.
Apple’s acquisition of Beddit was first reported by CNBC, and was confirmed by Beddit itself on its privacy policy page. Sadly though, neither company provided any details about the acquisition. Beddit did mention that all of its data, including data synced from the Health app, will be handled in accordance with the Apple Privacy Policy.
Beddit’s latest device is the Beddit 3 Sleep Monitor, a device made specially for the bedroom. Retailing for US$149 (about RM650), you place it under your bedsheets, and it will track your sleep, if you snore, your breathing rate, heart rate, and even optimise your bedroom environment. What makes it stand out is that it is not a wearable, so you don’t need to have an extra piece of hardware strapped to your body.
We don’t know what Apple plans to do with Beddit, but fingers crossed that the Cupertino company will find a way to put sleep tracking into its Watch. Right now, the Apple Watch needs to be charged daily – preferably at night – which is probably why the wearable does not come with built-in sleep tracking. You can install third-party apps, but the experience will not be as seamless as if Apple were to make it themselves.
