Nextbit Unveils the Robin, the Smarter Smartphone that Won’t Run Out of Storage

Nextbit Robin Main

One of the most annoying things in some high-end smartphones these days is the limited amount of storage and the lack of an expandable storage. Nextbit, a company formed by former members of Google’s Android team, wants to change that with a brand new phone called the Robin, which will never run out of storage…sort of.

The Robin comes with 32GB of internal storage, however, it leverages on the cloud for even more storage – it ships with 100GB of cloud storage space for free. It’s not like your typical cloud storage though, where you either opt to have everything in the cloud, or upload manually. It’s “a new kind of smart” that will automatically optimise the space on your phone when it sees you need it.

Robin backs up apps, photos, music and such to the cloud when you’re connected to power and Wi-Fi. Should you run out of storage, it will intelligently remove apps and photos you have not used for a while. When you need the app or photo back, just tap on it and Robin will restore the full version right away.

Nextbit Robin

Specifications wise, the Robin is a high-end Android smartphone. It features a 5.2” Full HD display and is powered by a Snapdragon 808 processor with 3GB of RAM on board. Camera wise, Nextbit did not mention what sensors the Robin is using, but says that their “optical partners have world-class expertise tuning smartphone cameras”. There’s a 13MP shooter at the back with phase detection autofocus, and thanks to cloud storage, it allows you to take and store RAW photos without ever running out of space. The front has a 5MP shooter.

Other specs include dual front facing stereo speakers, LTE, NFC, Fingerprint sensor, USB Type-C, 2680mAh battery, and will ship with the latest Android version out of the box, hopefully, Android Marshmallow.

Nextbit Robin Back

The Nextbit Robin is available for crowd funding in Kickstarter starting from US$299 (add US$42 for shipping to Malaysia). At the time of writing, the cheapest option has all been taken up, the next option is US$349. It will ship with a phone and a charging cable and a “special SIM tray”, and is available in midnight or mint colorway.
