Apple iPhones are not exactly the toughest smartphones around, although they are hardy enough to take a tumble or two. However, the real question is how many iPhones does it take to stop a bullet? The answer is slightly more impressive than one would think. Considering the test was done with a close range shot from an assault rifle.
EveryThingApplePro makes Youtube videos about Apple products, most of which are the run of the mill tips and tricks or top 10 apps. This time however, he set out to destroy a selection of iPhones with extreme prejudice. It wasn’t just iPhone 6s left in the lineup, but a variety of models from the iPhone 6 plus to what appears to be an iPhone 4 of some sort. At the very end of the line, was a Samsung Galaxy S6; which remained undamaged until the end.
Surprisingly, it only took five iPhones to stop the steel core bullet from the AK-74 semi-automatic rifle. While the AK-74 uses a substantially smaller round than its more popular predecessor, the AK-47, it is still capable of penetrating most kinds of body armour used by the military. EveryThingApplePro ended the experiment by finishing off the remaining devices with a shotgun slug, that simply ended all the phones involved.
Making a bullet-proof vest out of iPhone may not be the best solution available, but if it came down to being a necessity then at least you now know how many to layer on for optimal results. That being said, it would better to avoid being shot at in the first place.
