Disappointed at the current battery life on smartwatches? It looks like LG Chem has a solution for that. The company recently unveiled a new hexagonal battery that offers a longer battery life compared to traditional batteries.
A hexagon-shaped battery makes more sense compared to the previous rectangular or square-shaped batteries, especially for rounded smartwatches. It offers better space efficiency, and has an increased battery capacity of up to 25% – that’s about 4 hours more of operational time compared to a typical smartwatch today.
“A reason why we are mass-producing Hexagon Batteries are due to increased recent demands for circular design. We have worked together with global IT companies on developing battery technologies for smartwatches.”
The battery uses “Stack & Folding” method that injects electrolytes after stacking anode material, separation film, and cathode material layer by layer. This allows for better freedom in design, energy density, and a more stable performance compared with winding method.
The hexagonal battery will enter mass production before the end of this year. Meanwhile, LG Chem also unveiled that they are working on batteries of other shapes, including a ring-shaped one with a hole in the middle, and an L-shaped one.
